Top 10 Tips For Homeowners

We understand that plumbing issues can be quite overwhelming. That is why we've decided to give you some useful tips to keep your drains in tip top shape! Here's a bit of advice from us to you to help you keep your drains in good condition.
  • #1 Find Out Where Your Water Shutoff Valve Is Located

A large water leak or plumbing emergency can cause damage in only minutes. It's important to know how to turn off your water valve as soon as possible to spare you from expensive water damage repairs.

  • #2 Own a Plunger and Drain Snake

A plunger is a very common tool to use when you have a blocked toilet or drain and is easy to use for clogs that are not too bad.

A drain snake is slightly more effective because it doesn't need the use of suction. The drain snake goes down into the drain to the clog to either break it up or extract the blockage.

Both, the plunger and drain snake can be purchased from your local hardware store.

  • #3 Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners

Despite what you have been told, regular use of chemical drain cleaners can actually harm your pipes in the long run. It's better to use a drain snake and use professional maintenance services.

  • #6 Don't Pour Grease or Oil Down the Drain

It's easy to think that oil or grease is safe to pour down your drain, as it is in liquid form. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Oil and grease get stuck in your drains as they solidify and capture other particles moving down your drains.

It's best to wait until the fat has solidified in your cooking pans so you can wipe it up and throw it in your compost bin!

  • #7 Clean Your Shower Drain Regularly

It's no doubt the shower drain is the most common area of the house for drain cloggage. This is because it is used more frequently than other areas of the house and is the brunt of hair and other particles that find their way down the drain.

It's best to clean your drain regularly removing hair and other items that might go down. You can use a plunger to open the drain if you already have a clog. Oil the outside of the plunger with petroleum jelly so you can get better suction. You may also pour very hot water down the drain to help break up particles in your drain.

  • #8 Clogged Toilets

Clogged toilets are never pleasant. The best way to deal with one is to use your plunger to help drain the excess water and other waste in the toilet bowl. Next, fill a bucket of water and tip it quickly into your toilet to force a large flush and unclog your drain.

  • #9 Prolong Your Tap's Life

There's nothing worse and annoying than a leaky tap. The main cause of leaky taps is from forceful use of the handle when turning your tap on and off. Try not to pull or push the tap forcefully past the position it naturally wants to be in and you'll preserve the life of your tap.

  • #10 When In Doubt, Call Your Certified Plumber
